In Higashi-Osaka, conflicts arising from the coexistence of residential areas and small-scale factories have become a serious issue. Although they are physically adjacent, there are few opportunities for residents and factory workers to know one another. The distance between them continues to widen, further accelerating the decline of local workshops. Meanwhile, alleys emerge from the scale gap that occurs when factories are replaced by housing. These alleys are spaces that arise between residential and industrial uses—places where proximity and distance coexist. By utilizing these in-between alleys, this project seeks to recalibrate the distance between living and working, and to create spaces of interaction between residents and manufacturing from the backside of the high-density city.
