Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a long city running north-south, but the flow of people and goods is concentrated in the east-west direction. In addition, different entities have developed residential areas in the northern and southern parts of the city, resulting in different types of citizens. Ashiya City is bordered by the Ashiya River from north to south. The Ashiya River was once used to transport stones from the quarry for the construction of Osaka Castle, and was also used in the waterwheel industry for rice milling for sake brewing and rapeseed oil squeezing. A flow line space and exchange space utilizing the riverbed space of the Ashiya River running north-south could use the potential of the Ashiya River connecting the northern and southern parts of the city to revive the bustling atmosphere of Ashiya, which once flourished in the waterwheel industry, and create a place for citizen exchange. And by spreading north and south, we hope to create a greater sense of unity in the city of Ashiya.
