Shinjuku is the city with the world's busiest railway station. Many trains pick up and drop off passengers at the Station every day. The station connects with the city and transport networks. The department stores and station plaza around the station are due for renewal, and plans are underway to transform them into skyscrapers over 250 metres high, in line with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and other skyscrapers on the west side of the station. In conjunction with this, there are plans to convert the beautifully curved vehicle ramp at the west exit square, designed by Junzo Sakakura, which symbolises the area in front of Shinjuku Station, into a pedestrian-only area. Through the introduction of a bus and loading ramp that follows Sakakura's curves as access to the skyscrapers, and a high-rise promenade that gives a bird's-eye view of Shinjuku, which can be said to be typical of high-rise urban areas designs, from a distance from its rational structure, I examine the typical urban structure being planned and constructed these days.
