The Shikoku pilgrimage culture, which has continued for more than 1,300 years, is deeply rooted in a culture called “osettai” which means to provide tea and sweets free of charge to pilgrims on the road. However, due to the decrease in the number of small halls called chado, which served as places of entertainment and a stronghold for local residents, tea and sweets were no longer offered to the pilgrims when they were actually on the Shikoku pilgrimage. However, the culture of hospitality has taken strong root in Shikoku, changing its form with the increase in the number of signboards and the use of front hangings for Jizo statues. And it is not just the interaction between people who provide hospitality, but an anonymous relationship in which someone feels supported, even if they do not know who that someone is. This architectural proposal is an inheritance of the hospitality culture that underlies the Shikoku pilgrimage, and an architecture that preserves the anonymous relationship that is unique to the pilgrimage.
