Across Japan, the number of abandoned satoyama woodlands has been increasing. In Kurokawa, Hyogo Prefecture—where Kikuzumi charcoal has been produced since the Muromachi period—the charcoal industry has declined due to reduced demand. As a result, the satoyama has begun to fall into neglect, leaving only a single charcoal-producing household, and the relationships between local people and charcoal, as well as between people and the satoyama, have steadily weakened. This proposal aims to revitalize the satoyama by creating a “Charcoal × Citizens” place along the path connecting the settlement and the mountains, where charcoal is both produced and consumed, fostering encounters between people and people, and between people and charcoal.
