What is required for a place to grow in a way that is true to its own character? This project takes Sannomiya in Kobe City as its site and seeks to reconstruct the “belt model” as an urban structure inherent to the area. By reorganizing the belt-like spatial configuration into architecture, the project aims to generate a sense of exploration and to reintroduce the element of chance that is increasingly being lost in contemporary commercial spaces. Preserving the urban essence of Sannomiya embodied in the “belt model” through architecture means proposing an urban framework that assumes change over time. The opposing belt structures continue to exist as the backbone of the city, even as their uses and contents transform.
